Sowmya is an environmental scientist and a scholar student, recently having completed her MSc Environmental Science at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in the United Kingdom. She completed her undergraduate degree in BSc Environmental Science from the University of Portsmouth (UoP) in the United Kingdom.

She has had international experience in water resource management (wastewater) and Environmental Management Systems (EMS). She is currently researching the feasibility of using integrated constructed wetlands (ICWs) in treating sewage effluent.

Her research interests lie in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), sustainable technologies, the circular economy and global environmental policy.
